What is the gospel?

We read about Christ-less Christianity, Moralistic Therapeutic Deism, pluralism, universalism, and lots of other notions common today that are not the gospel and it begs the question why. How can we tell the difference between authentic biblical Christianity that has been agreed by Christians throughout history and these other notions that are merely a western postmodern creation? If you have ever heard interviews with The Episcopal Church’s Presiding Bishop and left scratching your head, you are not alone. What can be clear though is that her understanding of the faith is very different. Another great example of this is an interview conducted a few years ago by Chicago Sun Times columnist Cathleen Falsani. In it she explores the faith of a major political leader via a direct interview. It left me wondering just how many leaders in country both in politics and the church have such vague ideas of what Christianity is all about. If you read this, ask yourself what this person seems to believe about prayer, salvation, Jesus, Heaven, Hell, or the Bible. The complete interview is HERE.

The question then is how do we help students understand the difference between pious thinking and real faith in the living God?
