Time to teach Revelation?


I read the other day that these are perhaps the most challenging economic times in 70 years . How do we in youth ministry respond? Do we adjust programs? Offer less expensive trips and retreats? End free pizza? Shift money in our budgets from things we can do without so that there is more scholarship money for retreats?

How do we help our students pastorally? What will happen to the economically disadvantaged kid who already feels uncomfortable at school or among friends? How we will help kids whose dads or moms lose their jobs? What about home foreclosures? The questions can go on…

What do we need to teach at this time in order for our students to van a distinctly Biblical view of things? Is this the time for students to gain a kingdom perspective? To address issues like prosperity and wealth and materialism and stewardship (in the Biblical sense, not the the pledge sense per se)? Is it time to pull out the Dave Ramsey youth stuff?

Is it time to teach Revelation? I read the other day that Richard Bauckham noted New Testament scholar, wrote that Revelation pictures the beast as the Roman Empire. If that is a fair reading of Revelation, then on one level the book sheds light on how to live as Christians in the midst of the culture that surrounds us. Interesting…
