The greatest show on earth

Walt Mueller’s article in Youthworker online is something I really resonated with. His story and mine are not that different. Consider this comment

“Perhaps it’s because we’re too busy doing stuff for God that we’ve lost our ability to slow down and let God tell us who we’re supposed to be and how we’re to do what we’ve been called to do. Is it possible that in an effort to do great good for God, we actually are doing something horribly bad? I’ve also wondered if in our efforts to promote and further the kingdom of God, we actually might be keeping kids from going deep in the things of the kingdom.”

Dave thanks for posting this. I find it challenging on several levels and with all respect for Walt Mueller would push back on a few things for clarity sake.

    – Is "big church" the place for connectiveness or is it a place that the word is preached and the sacraments are rightly administered? In my context we have thousands in church on sundays I don't see it as a place where I feel connected on a heart level with others. If it's a place where the word is preached then is it also necessary to communicate in ways that most effectively proclaim the word? That might be with a healthy use of technology in a youth specific venue. I don't preach to adults the same way I preach to students, or grandparents. It's caused me to think.

    – You've run in much much broader youth ministry circles then I have. Have you ever come across a youth minister who, lets say in the last ten years, who admittedly trys to put on a show to attract kids? I'm not saying from our outside view point but that "Show" being the stated goal from inside the ministry? (I do know of para church orgs that state it but i'm thinking about the local church) I'm sure they are out there. I just haven't found one who admits it to me an outsider.

That said I resonated with Walt's "Best intentions" thought. Thanks for the challenge.
