Growing up it was suggested to me that there was no better time in history to live than now. All the advances of science, medicine, and technology were making our quality of life better than any generation before us in history… Or so I was told. The conventional wisdom was conveyed that man had progressed and evolved such that we had it better than ever. So, when I saw an article suggesting that a time period that few would want to jump back to was possibly more desirous to live in than today, it caught my eye. How would you like to live in a world with: Low taxes, a great lifestyle, little crime, no lobbyists, money that had consistent value, great beauty, healthy food and plenty of work (meaning low unemployment)? It sounds great to me! The writer was suggesting that this characterized the middle ages – what we know as the dark ages. Take a look at his arguments and then think about what our students think is the best time period to live in.
