The Path of Celtic Prayer
Calvin Miller

I began reading this as I approached a week at Northumbria Community, a modern Celtic monastic community based near the Holy Isle of Lindesfarne in the extreme northeast of England. (this part of the country was once part of Scotland but we won’t get into that ugly history). I found this to be a most helpful introduction to the patterns of the prayers of the Celtic Christians from so long ago (ie 500’s – 600’s AD). The Celtic people lived in a time when life was typically short and unpredictable. Their prayers reflect honesty and vulnerability before God while being very practical and earthy in nature. All of life was sacred to these folks whose leaders (such as Patrick, Columba, and Aiden) were described as very prayerful people. Miller focuses on six types of Celtic prayer that he believes can help draw today’s Christian into a closer walk with God. This short book was not only valuable to my time at the community, but Lord willing, will have made a lasting impact on my prayer life.
